There are several ways to GO GREEN! Not only is going green beneficial to our planet, it will be beneficial to your pocket. Millions of people are going green as you read this. Here are several different tips on how to join me, and Mr. Conkle's science classes to go green to save green!
Believe it or not, the way you eat can affect your bills. Think about it, all the energy it takes to cook and the food. If you're not careful, the costs could rack up!
>Most families include meat in their everyday meal. Try eating one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
>While preparing your meals, never, ever, ever leave on the stove, this is not only a hazard, it could waste energy, even if it is only for 30 seconds a night, you're wasting enough energy to prepare a simple side dish in about month.
>KEEP THE FRIDGE CLOSED! Never keep it open, this lets out the air that took energy to get cold.
>Cook in sunlight! Sometimes leaving the light off when you're cooking during the daytime could reward you with a lower electrical bill.
Air will find its way out of your home any way possible: a crack, a hole, and even the little openings in your ceiling, walls, and floor. This air could be valuable to you if you're trying to keep your house warm, and wouldn't you like to know how to save it as much as possible? Well, seal your air leaks!
> Use foam sealant around larger gaps around windows, baseboards, and other places where warm air may be leaking out.
> Kitchen exhaust fan covers can keep air from leaking in when the exhaust fan is not in use. The covers typically attach via magnets for ease of replacements.
> You may find it to be an investment when you install storm windows. If you already have storm windows, make sure they're efficient! You may or may not realize the difference in air temperature, but the difference sure will show up on your bills!
Water heating is a major part of energy expense in your home - believe it or not, its the third most expensive! It accounts for (around) 12% of your utility bill. Wouldn't it be nice to lower that cost?
> Install aerating, low-flow faucets and shower heads.
> Repair leaky faucets ASAP! They could waste gallons of water in just a short period of time.
>You might find you invest in purchasing a new energy-efficient water heater. While it may cost more initially than a standard water heater, the savings will rack up as the years pass!
During the winter season, it’s easy too loose energy! This could be costing you a pretty penny. Here are some tips you may find useful.
> Set your thermostat as low as you can (but make sure you're not depriving yourself of the proper amount of heat)
>Clean or replace filters on furnaces once a month, it may depend upon the brand of filter you use.
> Clean warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed.
Be sure they're not blocked by furniture, curtains, or even carpeting. You're not heating your home for it to just be blocked
There are many other small things you can do that make a big difference. Here are some other tips you may want to try out!
> Unplug electrical appliances when you're not using them, they are using energy even when they're not on!
> Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. (Simple, right?)
> Use carpool! If your friends are able to pick you up on your way to a football game, take advantage! This will use much less energy.
> Install compact fluorescent light bulbs, not only do they use less energy, they last longer!
> Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. Approximately 85% of the energy used to wash your clothes goes to heating the water when you set your controls to "warm."
> Spend less time in the shower, and install energy saving shower heads.
